Swimming Pool Sand Filters - Easy to Maintain and Operate
Customers of swimming pool sand filters says as a rule that the product is just how it was described and works great. But how often should the sand in a swimming pool sand filter be changed? Hayward recommend changing the sand in their hayward pool sand filter every five years, and actually customers change it only after 10-15 years of usage. Some customers uses their Hayward pool sand filter 20 years or more without changing the sand and still do the job, they are not as efficient as they should be. Swimming pool sand filters are the easiest to operate and maintain.

Sand in a swimming pool sand filters is #20 silica sand (45-55 mm). It is graded specially to trap 20-100 microns particles. While swimming pool sand filter collects dirt particles, its efficiency decreases by time. When pump shows 8-10 lbs pressure, prepare to backwash your swimming pool sand filter to remove out a dirt, captured by the filter. A properly sized swimming pool sand filter should, in most cases, be able to operate continuously for a period of 4 weeks between backwashings. Backwashing Multipoint Valve Filters
For backwashing of swimming pool sand filters with multipoint valve (like hayward pool sand filter, for example) you need, first of all, to shutdown a pump. Next, switch a valve from "Filter" to "Backwash" position, open backwach hose and waste valve (if any). Open air bleeder at the top of filter, turn filter pump on. Watch for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly if the pressure gauge spikes or if the hose kinks up. Wait 3-4 minutes, until waters runs clear from your swimming pool sand filter and shutdown a pump. Switch a valve to "Rinse" position, run a pump on Rinse for 15 seconds. Shut off a pump, move valve to "Filter" position, turn pump back on and wait for lower pressure. Then roll up backwash hose. Enjoy a best effect of your Hayward pool sand filter!

Backwashing Slide Valve Filters
For backwashing of swimming pool sand filters with slide valve just shut off pump, rollout backwash hoses (if any), unluck plunger T-handle. Open air bleeder at your swimming pool sand filter, turn pump on and watch for backpressure and hose for kinks. Backwash until water runs clear (2-5 mins), shutdown pump, and push T-handle back to locked position. Turn pump on and wait for lower pressure. Then roll up your swimming pool sand filter backwash hose.
